Devin Wood

B.S. University of Scranton
Advisors: Tim Foley and Patrick Orr

Devin Wood was born in California, but as a military brat moved a few times throughout his childhood before his family ultimately settled in the Scranton area. He received his B.S. in Biochemistry, Neuroscience, and Philosophy from the University of Scranton in 2014, developing broad interdisciplinary interests. During his undergraduate studies, he conducted biochemical and behavioral neuroscience research with Dr. Tim Foley in the field of Biochemistry and with Dr. Patrick Orr in the field of behavioral and molecular Neuroscience. His past research has focused on the biochemical and cognitive effects of various diet and exercise regiments in rodent models as well as the biochemical mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases. However, always more interested with the chemistry of biological systems rather than the systems themselves, his interests have matured and are directed at organic and organometallic catalysis. With a rich biochemical background, he intends to take nature’s perfected enzymatic systems as models to study new catalytic systems for organic reactions that will hopefully be suitable for chemical applications in industrial and medicinal use. He was also in a philosophy cult in undergrad… well, it was an Honors program that wore togas. Same difference. When not working on studies, he enjoys dabbling in modern literature, philosophy, and metaphysical paradoxes – he did come from a school of arts and science after all.
