Yi was born in Zhejiang, China. He received his B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Economics from Peking University. Then, he pursued graduate studies under the supervision of Professor Zhi-Xiang Yu at Peking University. His doctoral research was mainly focused on mechanistic studies on catalytic reactions and carbon-to-carbon proton transfers. He has also been trained in organic synthesis. After he got his Ph.D. degree, he continued his research in the same group. In September 2021, he joined the Lin group at Cornell University as a postdoctoral associate.
