Kyle grew up near Lake Tahoe, California and earned his B.S. from San Diego State University (SDSU). During his time at SDSU Kyle worked in a micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) lab where he developed implantable micro-neural sensors. This work exposed Kyle to the organic chemistry involved in photolithography and electrochemistry and sparked his curiosity about organic synthesis with a particular interest in the electronics of chemical reactions. Kyle pursued this interest by joining an electro-organic chemistry lab where he synthesized reversible redox-active hydrogen bond arrays and characterized their mechanisms of redox-mediated hydrogen bonding using cyclic voltammetry. Witnessing irreversible redox reactions associated with unspecified reactions of various analytes led to Kyle’s interest in harnessing these irreversible transformations to discover novel synthetic approaches to molecular functionalization and bond formation. With this new research focus in mind, Kyle pursued his PhD at Cornell to work with Dr. Song Lin and his team to learn about electrochemical organic synthesis.
